"Milford
Zornes"
May
2nd - June 8th,
2008
Artist's
Reception: Friday, May 2, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
On May 18, the Chaffey Community Art Association honored noted local artist Milford Zornes posthumously by holding a reception and art exhibit highlighting the three-year period of his career during World War II. At this time he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in China, Burma and India areas of the Pacific Theater.
Zornes was one of only 41 artists serving in the Army; all were charged with recording local events and activities in drawings and paintings. Zornes held the rank of Technical
Sargeant.
Brigadier General James P. Combs, Commander of Joint Forces Training Base at Los Alamitos and retired commander of the 40th Infantry Division was present at the reception. He highlighted the service of Milford Zornes to the war effort and presented a letter of appreciation and U.S. flag to Mrs. Zornes in recognition of her husband's service.
The exhibit of Zornes's work from this period, which spans 1943 to 1945, will be on display until June 8, 2008 at the CCAA Museum of Art, located in the Filippi Winery, 12467 Baseline Road, Rancho Cucamonga. Museum hours are Friday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. There is no admission fee (though donations are accepted and appreciated). Annual exhibit sponsors are J. Filippi Winery, Printing Resources of Southern California, and Target.
---
CCAA is
pleased to honor Milford Zornes posthumously with a selection of art created
during his service as a war artist, a distinction he shares with only 41 others.
The selection spans the years 1943-1945 when Milford was stationed in India,
Burma and China.
With this exhibit, CCAA brings a bit of American history to the local community.
An Artists' Reception was held on May 2. Bill Anderson, art dealer and long time
friend of Milford Zornes, invited Brigadier General James P. Combs, Commander of
Joint Forces Training Base at Los Alamitos and retired commander of the 40th
Infantry Division to be present at the opening. General Combs's presence
testifies to the appreciation that people from different perspectives have for
Milford's artistic contribution.

CCAA is pleased to present its annual Honoring the Artist exhibit, this year featuring Martha Underwood. Martha is a long time member who has served CCAA in the past as Exhibit Chair and show judge. Martha also has a painting in CCAA's Permanent Collection - the 37 ¼ x 29 inch watercolor Doves in Flight, painted in 1999.
An Artists' Reception is scheduled for Sunday, January 6, 2008 from 2 pm-4 pm with a members-only preview from 1-2 pm. There is no admission fee (though donations are accepted and appreciated) and light refreshments will be served. Annual exhibit sponsors are J. Martha has exhibited her watercolors in many juried shows throughout California and is represented in numerous private collections. She has been included in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in America in the Millennium. She graduated from Scripps College and received a master's degree from Otis Art Institute. She attended Chouinard Art School, University of California, Riverside, and Claremont Graduate School.
Though her primary interest has always been painting, Martha took time out to pursue the Fiber Arts. She produced many of her own three-dimensional tapestries and designed tapestries that were woven by French artists in Aubusson. Her works were included in book and magazines and are found in collections across the country.
As a versatile artist, she moves into other avenues of art comfortably. In addition to her watercolor endeavors, she is also an illustrator. Though she has done a great deal of commercial illustration, she prefers to illustrate children's books and coloring books.
After teaching art at Chaffey College for more than twenty years, she retired in 1996. She still teaches workshops and judges shows, and when time permits, she continues to paint and travel.

The exhibit will be on display from Saturday, September 15 to Sunday, October 28, 2007 at the CCAA Museum of Art, located in the Filippi Winery, 12467 Baseline Road, Rancho Cucamonga. The exhibit is being sponsored by CCAA members George and Karen Morris. Annual sponsors are J. Filippi Winery, Printing Resources of Southern California, and Target.
Line, tone and gesture are all elements that make up the foundation of drawing -- which in turn is the foundation of painting. In its most basic form, the drawing tool may be little more than a stick burned to charcoal, much like a prehistoric man may have used. Or the artist may select graphite pencil, ink & wash, colored charcoal or other mediums. Regardless of the drawing tool used by the artist, the result is the same: we are dazzled and inspired.
In this exhibit, the Chaffey Community Art Association presents a collection of works by some gifted draftsmen displaying a variety of styles and approaches, but all revealing a love of basic drawing as an effort unto itself.

The closing reception is scheduled for Sunday, October 28 from 2 pm-4 pm.
Two exhibiting artists, Wei Lo and Joe Pastor, will speak at 3 p.m. during the closing reception. Mr. Lo, who is originally from Taiwan, has taught at Chouinard Art Institute and currently teaches at Tri-Community Center in West Covina. Both Mr. Lo and Mr. Pastor will discuss how to approach a drawing to make it work unto itself rather than as a workup to a painting.

"Fiber
Pictures"

Joanell
Connolly and Rose Hughes
July
20 th - September 7 th,
2007
Artist's
Reception: Sunday, August 5, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
The Chaffey Community Art Association is pleased to present Fiber Pictures, a collection of works by artists using textiles as their medium of express. From the abstract to the pictorial, these works reveal the same qualities as oil and watercolor paintings - color, design, composition and idea.
The exhibit will be on display from Saturday, July 20 to Sunday, September 7, 2007 at the CCAA Museum of Art, located in the Filippi Winery, 12467 Baseline Road, Rancho Cucamonga. Museum hours are Friday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
An Artists' Reception is scheduled for Sunday, July 29 from 2 pm-4 pm. Exhibiting artists Cindy Rinne, Susan Willen, Joanell Connolly and Rose Hughes will be present. There is no admission fee (though donations are accepted and appreciated) and light refreshments will be served.
Cindy Rinne's concepts for her fiber works often begin with her poetry, a Bible passage or an observation of nature. Her style is painterly using collage. Susan Willen began making quilts in the 1980s. After she saw her first art quilt in 1990, she was inspired by the synthesis of a traditional craft and a contemporary artistic perspective. She views her quilts as a combination of painting and sculpture.
Joanell Connolly creates art quilts, wearable art and art cloth. The starting point of her work is the interaction of color, design and contrasts, and words often play an integral part in her work. Rose Hughes draws her inspiration for her quilt art from her love of the ever-changing hills that comprise the landscape, and from the ravens that mirror and mock this region's boisterous and sometimes crazy human residents.

Paintings from the Museum's Collection
June
2 nd - July 15 th,
2007
Opening
Reception: Sunday, June 3, 2:00-4:30 p.m.
Closing
Reception: Sunday, July 15, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
To mark the closing of the annual exhibit of paintings selected from our permanent collection, CCAA has invited E. Gene Crain, California native, long time Laguna Beach resident, and owner of a significant collection of California regional art, to present a talk on the California regional school of painting. The talk will be given at 3 pm on Sunday, July 15 at the CCAA Museum of Art during the closing reception (2 to 4 pm).
Mr. Crain's collection of over 900 works began in the early 1960s when he met artist Rex Brandt (who is represented in the CCAA permanent collection) at the artist's home in Corona del Mar. Through Brandt, Mr. Crain was introduced to the artists of the California School, including Millard Sheets, Tom Craig, Emil Kosa, Jr., Milford Zornes (all of whom are represented in CCAA's permanent collection) and Phil Dike, John Haley, Joan Irving, Doug Kingman, Tom E. Lewis, Maurice Logan, Erle Loran, Dan Lutz, Barse Miller, Phil Paradise, Charles Payzant, and George Post.
Mr. Crain is a recognized expert in the California School and his personal collection is known as one of the best in the United States of California regional scene paintings from the 1930s and 1940s. His collection includes over 900 works - paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture - representing his relationship with the individual artists as well as his passion for the California school.
-----
The Chaffey Community Art Association is pleased to present Celebrating 65 Years: The Permanent Collection, the annual exhibit featuring paintings selected from our permanent collection. The works that will be displayed are from the Museum's archives and will show the breadth of the permanent collection.
Each year CCAA exhibits a select group of paintings from the permanent collection. These are not the paintings displayed throughout the year; rather, they are from CCAA's archives. This is an opportunity to view paintings by major artists from the Southern California School of artists including Millard Sheets, Emil Kosa, Milford Zornes, Rex Brandt and Conrad Buff.
To celebrate the 65th anniversary of CCAA's founding, the opening reception on June 3 will be a birthday party. There is no admission fee, though we invite all CCAA members and supporters to bring a birthday present on that day - a gift that will allow CCAA to continue to add to the permanent collection. In place of light refreshments, birthday cake will be served.

The exhibit will be on display from Friday, April 27 to Sunday, May 13, 2007 at the CCAA Museum of Art, located in the Filippi Winery, 12467 Baseline Road, Rancho Cucamonga. Museum hours are Friday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
An Artists' Reception is scheduled for Sunday, April 29 from 2 pm-4:30 pm. There is no admission fee (though donations are accepted and appreciated) and light refreshments will be served
Bill Anderson is a multifaceted artist who has produced a dizzying array of artwork including oils, watercolors, pastels, drawings, printmaking, etchings, murals and sculpture. His honors include Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Art, and Outstanding Teacher awards.
Mr. Anderson was born and raised in Mankato, Minnesota but has been living and working in California for more than four decades. He has taught art in Southern California for more than thirty-five years; exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Holland, Italy and Greece; and written books. For over twelve years he has had his own art gallery in Sunset Beach, California.

New
Museum Hours, effective April 4, 2007
Effective April 4, 2007, the Chaffey Community Museum of Art will no
longer be open to the general public on Wednesday and Thursday. New hours are
12 noon to 5 pm, Friday through Sunday. This change does not affect Gayle
Stafford's live model drawing classes which will continue to be held the first
Thursday of every month at the Museum.
The change is necessary because of budgetary constraints. Beginning in April,
the Museum's expenses increase by $600 per month for rent. CCAA regrets the
shortening of hours but at this time cannot find an additional source of revenue
to offset the expense. Any member or friend of the Museum wishing to pledge an
amount to offset the rent so that we can restore service to five days a week are
invited to call Norma Jones at the Museum, 909.463.3733.

"Japan
Mix: NewMANGA, Contemporary Japanese Graphics and More"
An
exhibit featuring works from nine Japanese artists
November
1st - November 27th,
2006
This exhibit brings an unusual cultural experience to the Inland Empire - the opportunity to experience contemporary Japanese art as expressed in graphics, painting and sculpture; to meet the artists; and to learn about an art form that is spreading rapidly to Europe and the United States. Some of the artists illustrate for books and other publications; some are involved with
manga, the Japanese word whose literal meaning is random or whimsical pictures. Manga is roughly equivalent to an American comic book, though manga has more significance in Japanese culture. In fact, in 2003, manga accounted for over 23% of the sales and almost 38% of the number of books and magazines sold in Japan. The nine artists were organized by Himiko Rose, a 27-year-old woman born to a Japanese mother and Jewish American father. (Her full name is Himiko Rose Komatsu Shapiro.) At the age of six, Himiko moved to Japan where she completed her education through high school. She then returned to the United States to attend The Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Following graduation, she returned to Tokyo and now works as an illustrator. Kazumi Kobayashi has been studying wood carving with internationally-renowned sculptor John
Svenson; she will be exhibiting examples of her wood as well as glass pieces done in collaboration with David Svenson (who is showing his glass kokeshi work). Six other artists -
Boojil, Soushun, Nanoka Kisaragi, Satoko Chiba, Bloodstone and Ryu Taeuchi - will be presenting their illustrations and art.

Lyn Nelson
In 1979, Robert Lyn Nelson created his
landmark painting "Two Worlds," his vision of life above and below the
ocean's surface. This launched a successful and widely imitated genre of
contemporary art, and has become the powerful symbol for one of the most
compassionate environmental efforts of our time, the struggle to preserve the
life of the sea. Nelson's collectors include many public figures and leading
institutions, and sales of his work and personal appearances have resulted in
significant financial contributions to many environmental organizations. His
accomplishments result from a lifetime of study and dedication to his craft.
