THE BARBARA LINE COLLECTION

Nucleus of the Chaffey Community Art Association Permanent Collection of fine paintings was the Barbara Line Collection. This was a succession of fine paintings donated by Francis and Helen Line, beginning in 1941, as a memorial to their lovely young daughter.

MARJORIE REED LINDGREN 1908-1999

Marjorie Reed was inspired to paint by her father. She studied under Jack Wilkerson Smith, a noted landscape artist. Marjorie loved the outdoors, horses in action, and western history. She roamed the countryside and became acquainted with Captain William Banning, who was stage driver for his father, the famed Phineas Banning. From him she acquired a  knowledge of stage coaches and the handling of teams of horses. Enthralled by the romantic history of the Butterfield Trail, she began work on a series of paintings depicting the riding of the Butterfield Stage on the different runs from San Francisco to Yuma crossing the Colorado River. There are a total of 21 paintings in the series. This series attracted national attention and was acquired by the late James Copley, owner of the Copley Press and publisher of the San Diego Union Tribune.

Lindgren's work has been featured in National Geographic, Trail West and Arizona Highways.
